Join our Volunteer Check-in Team

Want to help but can't do it in person? Join our remote check-in team!

Our check-in team is a crucial part of our mission to ensure the wellbeing of the precious cats and kittens in our care.

What will you need to help?

  • Access to Facebook Messenger - this is our primary tool of communication with our foster carers

  • Access to the internet

  • A little bit of time each week (as much or as little as you are able)

  • A little bit of experience with cats and their behaviours is ideal, but not at all a requirement!

  • Comfortable talking to and connecting with foster carers through Facebook Messenger chat

What's involved?

We have our own web-based Shelter Management system where volunteers log check-ins, helping us keep detailed records of each cat's time in our care. To stay organised, we use the Asana project management tool to set ourselves reminders for check-ins with foster carers. Communication with foster carers is all done through Facebook Messenger.

What is the time commitment?
What makes this volunteering opportunity pretty convenient is that it's incredibly self-guided and is an easy way to help the rescue out immensely without needing to commit a huge amount of time. You have the flexibility to choose the number of cats you want to check-in on, working well with your availability.

What if I need support?
Our dedicated team of volunteers is always available in our chat group to support you. If any issues or concerns arise during your check-ins, our volunteers are able to triage situations that may require expert veterinary experience or a vet consultation. They're also there to discuss any behavioral matters or concerns you may have, and can step in to assist you if needed.

What are the types of things i'd be discussing with foster carers?
Most of the time, check-ins are very straight forward. It is very casual and conversational, but the types of things we might ask while doing check-ins are:

• How is the cat adjusting to the new environment?
• How is the cat's overall health and energy levels?
• Have there been any changes in eating habits or litter box behavior? Any runny poo or constipation?
• Are there any ongoing health concerns?
• How is the cat's appetite, and have there been any changes in the last week?
• Are there any updates about the cats personality you'd recommend being updated on their adoption profile on Pet Rescue? Do you have any new pictures we could use on the profile or for social media promotion?
• How does the cat respond to new people or visitors?
• Is the cat comfortable with handling, such as being picked up or having its paws touched?
• How does the cat interact with other pets or family members?
• Have there been any noticeable changes in behavior, such as increased playfulness or shyness?

This is a very detailed list, but just some ideas for inspiration! Usually just… "How was <CAT NAME> this week? Any updates since we last spoke?" is a good enough conversation starter/prompt.

Whether you can commit to checking in on a few cats or a larger group, the choice is entirely yours!
